The Art of Marlow Brooks

Marlow Brooks is a calligrapher, painter and Worsley trained practitioner. She began painting as a child and has studied oriental calligraphy for 22 years, training with Yoneko Mizushima, Kobun Ottogawa Roshi and others. She teaches ongoing classes at Naropa University in Boulder. Her work has appeared since 1987 in solo exhibitions in Canada and the United States and she has also shown in major exhibitions with Kobun Ottagawa Roshi and Shibata Sensei, the Imperial Bowmaker of Japan.

Marlow Brooks honours traditional oriental calligraphy as a strong practice of being "on the spot" with her entire body, mind and spirit, and is delighted to blend this ancient art with her love of colour and painting.

"Working on The Spirit of the Points project," she says, "has been a transformational experience. In order to authentically portray the spirits of the elements and officials, I had to enter deeply into their world and in doing so, have had to encounter the vivid reflections of my personal officials. I had to wait for some of the officials to balance in my own body, mind and spirit, before I could accurately portray them. A deep learning experience!"
